Handmade book workshop in Weybridge, Surrey, with Rachael Talibart, Adrian Beasley and Clea Beasley. GROUP SIZE: 8.

We are currently looking at dates for 2024. Please email us if you are interested in attending this workshop: info@f11workshops.com.

This workshop builds on the basic skills taught in our initial Handmade Book workshop, adding additional techniques.  While it is ideally suited to those who have attended that workshop or have acquired some experience of making a simple handmade book elsewhere, previous experience isn’t essential, as with a tutor to student ratio of 3:8, we can teach you all the skills needed to construct the book form we have selected, whatever your experience.

We will be constructing a book with drum-leaf binding, a book form that incorporates an adaptation of a flat-back, case style binding, with lay-flat pages.  We will help with preparation of images and the physical building of the book. We provide all the equipment and materials needed, so you only need to bring your computer and images. If you want to make more books at home, we will provide a comprehensive shopping list of all the equipment used and a list of material suppliers, as well as a thorough worksheet with all the steps needed to make more books, and other resources.

Description

Two-day, drum leaf book workshop

This course will teach you the skills needed to produce a book with a drum leaf binding. Your book will have up to 16 pages (8 double page spreads) available for images and/or text.

As with our initial ‘Handmade Book Workshop’, we will help you with selection, sequencing and editing your collection of images in preparation for printing and then constructing a handmade book with drum leaf binding.  Our chosen book structure incorporates an adaptation of a flat-back, case style binding, with lay-flat pages. The lay-flat nature of the book lends itself to a wide range of layouts, including double page spreads that incorporate a single image or multiple images and text.

Day 1 (10am - 5pm)

We will help you to create a shortlist of images and a set of contact prints to assist in sequencing. We will look at ways to incorporate text and blank pages and we will help you sequence your book. Once you have finalised your selection and layout you will edit and prepare your pages for printing. At the end of the day, your printed pages will be complete ready for book making.

Day 2 (10am - 5pm)

We will teach you the skills needed to produce a book with a drum leaf binding. Your book will have up to 16 pages (8 double page spreads) available for images and/or text. You will learn how to measure, trim, and glue the book block, how to add decorative endpapers and how to make a decorative binding/cover for your book using cloth and paper.

We will provide the tools and materials needed to complete your project, including a selection of plain and patterned papers and linen book cloth.

Adrian, Clea and Rachael are enthusiastic and experienced teachers and you will receive their one-to-one attention throughout the workshop.  The workshop is full of practical advice so that, if you wish to, you may continue to create books with confidence at home. With a group of only 8 clients and 3 tutors, individual attention is guaranteed.

For both workshops, you will need to bring your laptop with a selection of images to work on. Before the workshop, you should identify the topic of your book and bring a good selection of images (30-50) to use as the starting point for selection. If you do not have a laptop, we may be able to accommodate desktop machines. Please get in touch to discuss.

To secure your place on either workshop, we take an £100 deposit payable via PayPal now (no PayPal account needed). Please select the relevant date from the dropdown menu above and click the 'add to basket' link. Six weeks before the workshop, we require the balance which is payable via Bank Transfer. You will receive instructions by email.
