Drum Leaf book workshop

£100

Total cost:£515, including all materials and use of tools, Fotospeed fine art papers, pigment inks, use of Canon and Epson printers, refreshments and lunch.

This course will teach you the skills needed to produce a book with a drum leaf binding.
Your book will have up to 16 pages (8 double page spreads) available for images and/or text.

We will help you with selection, sequencing and editing your collection of images in preparation for printing and then constructing a handmade book with drum leaf binding. Our chosen book structure incorporates an adaptation of a flat-back, case style binding, with lay-flat pages. The lay-flat nature of the book lends itself to a wide range of layouts, including double page spreads that incorporate a single image or multiple images and text.

Previous experience of hand making books is not required, as with a tutor to student ratio of 3:8, we can teach you all the skills needed to construct the book form we have selected, whatever your experience.

Group of 8 / Handmade book workshop in Weybridge, Surrey, with Rachael Talibart, Adrian Beasley and Clea Beasley.

To secure your place on the workshop, we take an £100 deposit payable via PayPal now (no PayPal account needed). Six weeks before the workshop, we require the balance which is payable via Bank Transfer. You will receive instructions by email.

Day 2 (10am – 5pm)
We will teach you the skills needed to produce a book with a drum leaf binding. Your book will have up to 16 pages (8 double page spreads) available for images and/or text. You will learn how to measure, trim, and glue the book block, how to add decorative endpapers and how to make a decorative binding/cover for your book using cloth and paper.

We will provide the tools and materials needed to complete your project, including a selection of plain and patterned papers and linen book cloth.

Adrian, Clea and Rachael are enthusiastic and experienced teachers and you will receive their one-to-one attention throughout the workshop.  The workshop is full of practical advice so that, if you wish to, you may continue to create books with confidence at home. With a group of only 8 clients and 3 tutors, individual attention is guaranteed.

You will need to bring your laptop with a selection of images to work on. Before the workshop, you should identify the topic of your book and bring a good selection of images (30-50) to use as the starting point for selection. If you do not have a laptop, we may be able to accommodate desktop machines. Please get in touch to discuss.
