Black and White Brighton Photography Workshop

£100

Total cost: £325 including lunch and refreshments. Group of 4.

Black and white photography has a long tradition; when photography was first invented, it was the only option, yet it survived the invention of colour photography and remains a popular medium to this day. It is common to hear photographers talk about when a photograph should be converted to black and white but, in this workshop, we will be more interested in why and how we might create a photograph that is intended to be black and white from the outset.

Shooting on the East Sussex coast, near Brighton, we will explore the reasons for shooting in black and white and the sort of images and subjects most suited to this approach, but not in a prescriptive way – experimentation and imagination are a vital part of black and white photography and Rachael is keen to encourage it at every opportunity. After shooting in the morning, we will spend some time looking at editing techniques specific to black and white photographs, before returning to the shore for the end of the day.

Description

We know that a lot of black and white photographers like to use film. Rachael works in digital and that will influence her technical tuition on the day. However, we think the really interesting part is the creative side of black and white photography and that applies to film and digital equally. If you shoot film and are unsure whether this workshop would be suitable for you, please feel free to email us at info@f11workshops.com.

This is not a particularly strenuous workshop and we are able to park reasonably close to all the locations. There are short stretches of shingle beach to be negotiated at all locations and, depending on the recent weather, some of these may be steeply banked.

You will need to get to the start of the workshop, near Brighton on the East Sussex coast (exact location to be confirmed a week before the workshop), under your own steam.  You will then have the choice of using your own car to drive between locations or coming in Rachael's car.

To secure your place on the workshop, we take an £100 deposit payable via PayPal now (no PayPal account needed). Please select the date from the dropdown menu above and click the 'add to basket' link. Four weeks before the workshop, we require the balance of £225 which is payable via Bank Transfer. You will receive instructions by email.
