Group of 8 / Three-day, immersive workshop in Weybridge, Surrey, with Rachael Talibart and Adrian Beasley.
Working in black & white (B&W) can encourage creativity in a way that colour often doesn’t.  We feel more at ease pushing the boundaries and the viewer expects monochrome images to be “artistic”.

This workshop is focused on creating and printing compelling B&W images. Designed to be hands on, the workshop includes plenty of time for you to practise what you have learned using your own images.  Adrian and Rachael are enthusiastic and experienced B&W photographers and printers and, with a maximum group size of 8, you will receive their individual attention throughout the workshop.  With two professional pigment ink printers at your disposal and a wide range of art papers, you can experiment with different approaches to editing and printing. There will be some light homework for you to complete before the workshop. Rachael and Adrian will guide you through this at the time.

Days 1 and 2

An introduction to B&W photography. Why choose B&W. A look at some notable B&W photographers of the past. Guidance on creating B&W photographs in camera – how to see and compose in B&W. A discussion of different types of B&W, including high and low key, split toning, simulated and real infrared.

Processing B&W photographs using Lr/Ps and SilverEFX. Guidance on tools, using global and local adjustments and filters. Style ideas – focus, contrast, matching looks/tones across a body of work. Live editing demonstrations.

Printing considerations and how to prepare your photographs for print using Lr/Ps.

Day 3

A full day of editing and printing your photographs with hands on guidance from Adrian and Rachael. Unlike many printing workshops, with us you will connect your own laptops to our printers so that you are fully in charge of the process.

Who should attend and what to bring
This workshop is ideal for those wanting to explore the wonderful world of B&W and learn how to create, develop and print their own images.  Some experience of Lightroom and/or Photoshop is needed.  This workshop would not suit an absolute beginner. • A computer with your editor of choice (we will demonstrate techniques using Lightroom, Photoshop and Nik Silver EFX).
• Images to work with.
