A3 Japanese stab-bound book workshop
£100
Total cost: £525, including all materials and use of tools, papers, pigment inks, use of Canon and Epson printers, refreshments and lunch.
Handmade book workshop in Weybridge, Surrey, with Rachael Talibart, Adrian Beasley and Clea Beasley. GROUP SIZE: 8.
A new workshop in which you will create an A3 book using Japanese stab binding with a soft slip-sleeve. The use of sewn binding allows us to work with a wider variety of materials than would be suitable for glued bindings. So, there will, in addition, be an opportunity to include a selection of more unusual media in your book, from vellum to rice paper to Awagami washi paper and more, to create a truly unique artist’s book of your work.
Although the construction of the book is quicker than most of the glued bindings we have explored in the past, extra time will be needed to plan and sequence your contents, because the possibilities are so broad. While this workshop is ideally suited to those who have attended any of our other bookmaking workshops, or have acquired some experience of making a handmade book elsewhere, previous experience isn’t essential, as with a tutor to student ratio of 3:8, we can teach you all the skills needed to construct the book form we have selected, whatever your experience.
You will need to bring your laptop with a selection of images to work on. Before the workshop, you should identify the topic of your book and bring a good selection of images (30-50) to use as the starting point for selection. If you do not have a laptop, we may be able to accommodate desktop machines. Please get in touch to discuss.
To secure your place on this workshop, we take an £100 deposit payable via PayPal now (no PayPal account needed).
Six weeks before the workshop, we require the balance which is payable via Bank Transfer. You will receive instructions by email.

Event Details
Day 1 (10am – 5pm)
We will help you to create a shortlist of images and a set of contact prints to assist in sequencing. We will look at ways to incorporate text and blank pages and we will help you sequence your book. Once you have finalised your selection and layout you will edit and prepare your pages for printing. At the end of the day, your printed pages will be complete ready for book making.
Day 2 (10am – 5pm)
We will teach you to make a photo book using a traditional style of stitched binding based on the Japanese Stab Binding. This book will have 12 pages that can contain images and/or text. You could also incorporate some interleaved text pages printed on vellum. The completed book will be approximately A5 landscape format. If time allows, we will experiment with different stitching patterns – both traditional and more contemporary.
We will also teach techniques to make a simple book incorporating blank pages which are secured together using a sewn binding. For the book block, you will be able to select from cartridge paper, mixed media paper and watercolour paper, even including a mix of all three if you wish.
We will provide the tools and materials needed to make your books and access to the tools you will need. We will provide you with detailed notes and instructions after the workshop to support you in creating more books at home.
Adrian, Clea and Rachael are enthusiastic and experienced teachers and you will receive their one-to-one attention throughout the workshop. The workshop is full of practical advice so that, if you wish to, you may continue to create books with confidence at home. With a group of only 8 clients and 3 tutors, individual attention is guaranteed.
