Black and White – East Sussex

Friday, 7th September 2018, 11.30am - 8pm FULLY BOOKED

In honour of Rachael's new title as Black and White Photographer of the Year, we are proud to introduce this workshop, focused entirely on black and white photography. Black and white photography has a long tradition; when photography was first invented, it was the only option, yet it survived the invention of colour photography and remains a popular medium to this day. It is common to hear photographers talk about when a photograph should be converted to black and white but, in this workshop, we will be more interested in why and how we might create a photograph that is intended to be black and white from the outset.

Shooting on the East Sussex coast, near Rye, we will explore the reasons for shooting in black and white and the sort of images and subjects most suited to this approach, but not in a prescriptive way - experimentation and imagination are a vital part of black and white photography and Rachael is keen to encourage it at every opportunity. After shooting in the morning, we will spend some time looking at editing techniques specific to black and white photographs, before returning to the shore for the end of the day.

We know that a lot of black and white photographers like to use film. Rachael works in digital and that will influence her technical tuition on the day. However, we think the really interesting part is the creative side of black and white photography and that applies to film and digital equally. If you shoot film and are unsure whether this workshop would be suitable for you, please feel free to email us at info@f11workshops.com.

You will need to get to the start of the tour, near Rye on the East Sussex coast (exact location to be confirmed a week before the tour), under your own steam but then Rachael will drive the group around all day and return you to the start point at the end.

The cost of this workshop is £225 including lunch and refreshments. (Alcoholic drinks excluded.)

To secure your place on the workshop, please pay an £80 deposit now by clicking the PayPal link below (no PayPal account needed). Four weeks before the day of the workshop we will request the balance of £145, which is payable via Bank Transfer. You will receive instructions by email once the deposit is received.
